A Great Tutorial on Painting Black
IAfter struggling with lack of practice and a failing ability to resolve small details I’m happy with where my painting is now. However the thing which still gives me the most trouble is painting black. Lately I’ve been spending little time on the small black areas of my miniatures hoping they won’t be noticed. The thought of painting with a substantially larger black area sends me into a panic. At least it did, until I found this tutorial.

The results in this tutorial look great and I can’t wait to try them myself. For reference, here’s the last few things I’ve painted black. For Nightwing I was using the loaded brush blending demonstrated by Ben Komets of Painting Buddha. I found the technique very difficult to control and didn’t suit my style of painting.
It’s still better than what I’ve been doing lately which is applying very sharp transitions and calling the black glossy.
I had hoped to put the tutorial to use before I posted this article but I haven’t painted any hard black surfaces, only soft cloth. If you get a chance to use it please let me know if you found it useful.
