Nerdnight Report: X-Wing Miniatures Game
As a massive Star Wars fan and a miniatures gamer there was no way I could resist the X-Wing Miniatures Game by Fantasy Flight Games. Nor could I resist buying the expansion ships and an additional core set. This makes me happy to report that not only have I had a number of chances to get the game to the table but it is always well received with the verdict “more of this please.”
We played two games using the tournament rules. We had two players per side and split our forces as we felt best made sense. As is normal for new X-Wing players chaos reigned as ships collided. It wasn’t as bad in the first game where my teammate and I split our forces. In the second game we deployed closer to each other and not only did all the ships meet in the middle of the table but I managed to always have Vader bump into his wingman.
Bumping into a model causes you to lose your action for the turn. For Vader, who gets two actions, it is even worse. He also had the upgrade that allowed him to use an action to give his wingman a free action. All of that wasted.
After two games the results were split with one victory a piece. I’m happy with that result as everyone involved had a taste of victory.
I’m hoping to get a game of Rune Wars in next Nerdnight. A new player is a big Risk fan and when she saw the components of the Rune Wars box she was suitably impressed.
What are you playing in your group? If you are playing X-Wing do you have one player buying everything and sharing his collection or have your players started buying in. We’ve had a number of occassions where people have come to Nerdnight, played a game and immediately bought themselves a copy. Usually it’s a waste since you can only use one copy at a time.
Of course, with X-Wing where it would make sense this hasn’t happened. Still, I have my fingers crossed.
