DBA: Americas (and Polynesia/Melanesia) theme?

Postby WuZhuiQiu » Sat Jul 10, 2010 8:12 am

Hi, all. In addition to DBA book days, how about trying an Americas (and Polynesia/Melanesia) theme? Against medieval knight armies, they may be hopeless, but against each other, they may have a chance...

Does anyone have any armies for this? I don't.

I'm sure a few people do, I have a Mayan army (unpainted), I'm sure there was someone using various forms of Incans at the last DBA day,
and I seem to remember talking about this before and having a couple of people mention armies.

I would suspect that if you were to run a day such as you suggest, with a a few months of notice, you would get a decent amount,
you just need to volunteer to run it and what not.

Also depends how picky you are to I guess, the Vikings were in America for a short time for instance, does that count?

Thanks;
Mike

If someone wants to organize it by all means choose a date and let me know.

How many armies would be appropriate for this? It seems like it would be somewhat interesting.

@Duncan: Here's an initial list. Of course, not all are contemporary or even coextensive [?], for that matter. Some are fairly "monotype", too, so may not be all that interesting to play.

  • III/22 Maya
  • III/40 Norse Viking
  • III/41 Dog Peoples and Pueblo Cultures
  • III/58 Toltec
  • IV/9 Eastern Forest American
  • IV/10 Mound Builder American
  • IV/11 North-Western American
  • IV/12 Polynesian or Melanesian
  • IV/19 Tarascan or Toltec-Chichimec
  • IV/29 Tupi
  • IV/53 Mixtec or Zapotec
  • IV/63 Aztec
  • IV/70 Chanca
  • IV/71 Chimu
  • IV/72 Amazonian
  • IV/81 Inca

And possibly:
  • IV/68(b) Medieval Portuguese

The Portuguese crop up as the enemies of, for example, the Tupi, but I am unsure whether that is as a proxy for the later Conquistadores, or whether it is another "what if", much like the III/19 Welsh, who are also listed as possible enemies for certain armies of the Americas. Curiously, the Spanish are not an option, but it may be that the Portuguese, with their fewer mounted elements, were thought to be a better representation of the Spanish in the Americas. Regardless, if we do allow the Portuguese, I would propose that they be allowed only to take the Bd of their Kn//Bd elements, leaving them with the single element of Lh as their mounted force.

And there is the question of availablility as well.

I do find the idea strangely appealing though. I would paint up a DBA army for this if other people are interested and someone other than me researches the manufacturers (The only 15mm figures on the list that I have seen are Aztecs and Vikings)

Here's the beginnings of an availability list. In the meantime, more ideas can be found among the armies that are listed here...
