Warhammer Orc Boys

Everyone check, someone's not wearing their deoderant!
In this image there are figures painted at two different times. The figure closest to the camera, visably different, was painted for one of the first Games Workshop Retail Store painting competitions the company introduced in order to promote new releases. They gave all entrants a miniature from the new boxed set and a couple of weeks to paint them. Prizes were awarded for the best painted figure. It is a brilliant marketting plan, for the cost of a single figure they are able to generate some excitement about the new release.
I won the painting competition with this miniature. It was the first painting competition I entered, and, at the time, it was the best miniature I'd ever painted. Now I know I could do a lot better, but I sure was proud of it at the time. Since I won, I guess I had a reason to be proud. What I won fills out the ranks in the picture, the entire 6th Ed. boxed set, plus a nice map of the Warhammer World. I haven't finished painting all of the Orc Boys that came in the set, not to mention all the Empire troops.
These figures are my Games Workshop safety valve. When "The Battle of Skull Pass" was released I felt the urge to get back into Warhammer. I really wanted to paint a Warhammer army all of a sudden. Remembering that I still had these figures really helped. I've never actually played Warhammer. I've never painted enough to be able to. If I ever do decide I want to, however, I can start by painting what's in the boxed set, and if I still have the urge after I've painted all that, then obviously the urge is strong enough to warranty investing further.
Painted: c.2004 with Vallejo Paints.
