Republic to Empire Released for Pre-Order

November 2nd, 2009

There are a lot of shiney new rules for the Napoleonic Wars. Foundry released Napoleon and I’m expecting my pre-order of Black Powder any day now. Also on pre-order is Republic to Empire, a new game written by Barry Hilton and illustrated by Clarence Harrison of the League of Augsburg and Quindia, respectively.

I’ve long been a fan of Barry Hilton’s wargaming style. Along with David Imrie, a sometimes League-er, Barry paints some of the most dynamic and attractive wargame armies. A brilliant collector model begs to be picked up for study while Barry’s miniatures demand you lower your head to view them on the game table. Needless to say when I discovered he was writing rules for Napoleonics I was commited to buying them. I didn’t even require the addition of a section of the War of 1812 to seal the deal, though it is certainly a welcome addition.

When they arrive I will give a first look comparison. No promised when I’ll actually talk about how the game plays, it took me long enough to play Field of Glory after all. Hopefully the new leaf I’m turning over with my WWII Canadians will continue when I start my 1812 project.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this latest batch of rules, together with Sam Mustafa’s new one, pan out. Will there be a winner? Or will we all just go back to not having an overall favourite?!

I’ll have to check out Mr. Mustafa’s rules. I’ve seen the name on TMP, but hadn’t checked out the rules.
    Don’t forget Black Powder.

I hope they all win, there’s room for some good quality games with non-exclusive basing standards
