Two-brush blending
September 2nd, 2009I planned to post this before Game Summit but didn’t get the chance. I want to show what I wrote even though I’ve changed my mind. I spend a lot of time thinking and talking about painting. Sometimes you just don’t know until you try it.
“I can see improvement in my two-brush blending but I’m still not there. Today I think the paint dried too fast and gave me trouble. There’s a trick to it, especially trying to keep the paint out of areas where you don’t want it. Still, I can see the potential and speed once this technique is practiced.”
Since I wrote this I tried painting a Space Marine quickly using two-brush blending and had trouble achieving any kind of control over my blend. I think there’s something I’m missing about this technique, but it certainly isn’t what I hoped it would be. I can honestly say that I think 1000 Glazes is better than Two-Brush Blending. While there will always be situations where two-brush blending works well it will not be my go-to technique. I’ve switched to 1000 Glazes for the remainder of my Necromunda Ratskin Chief.

On the right is the most recent version. The Two-Brush Blending is very rough.
I’m really disappointed with the flesh on my Ratskin Chief. It’s rough and sloppy. I was tempted to go back and fix it but I hate painting over finished areas or stripping miniatures. My mistakes stand. It’s too easy getting caught up fixing every little thing and not getting anything painted. If this were a competition miniature or commission, it’s a different story, but I want to look at him and remember the parts I had problems with. I guess in this way I’m firmly in the army painter camp.
If anyone knows of a good resource on Two-Brush Blending, please let me know. I’m having trouble with my wet-brush dragging paint where I don’t want it. Here’s a good video I found on You-tube, but the camera operator gets bored and doesn’t show much what I’d like to see. If anyone knows any good sites or videos, please post a comment.
The best Two-Brush Blending video I’ve found.

The video or my painting? All I remember from Bob Ross was happy little bushes. The Ratskin Chief has a happy little shotgun, if that’s what you mean.

the Hot Lead DVD covers this technique really well. I ordered mine from here:
