I’m Baaaaaaack!

Sunday, October 8th, 2006

Well, after a long absence I am finally back. My computer is up and running, I’ve reset the password for the website so I can update it, and I’ve been painting. I’ve repainted the pants of the British Infantry for my 1812 project, finished the Mobile Infantry I was painting, and painted a bunch of 1/72 WWII German Infantry for a painting article. More on that later this month, I hope. (more…)

I can’t stand the silence

Sunday, July 23rd, 2006

Just a note to explain why things are so quiet. My computer has died, leaving me unable to update this site in a meaningful way (i.e., add pictures). I’ve also not been painting much after a 1 week vacation followed by 1 week of being sick. Also, I’m really not enjoying painting the Starship Troopers Mobile Infantry. The detail is soft and difficult to understand, so I’m having trouble deciding what is what, and what should be what colour. It’s a pain and I’ll have to work through slowly. Hopefully I can get my computer up and running again soon.

More Pants

Last night felt good. Not only did I finish The Writer’s Journey, a book I thoroughly enjoyed, I also managed to do well with my painting. So well, that I’ve completely forgotten that the colour I used is not the colour I wanted. My intention was to have a very cold green bodysuit for the Cap Troopers, with warmer green armour. The green is used, VMC Flat Green (I can’t remember the number. I have two Flat Greens, different numbers and different colours) looked plenty cold, but turned out warmer then I intended. Oh well, I’ll just have to change my plans. (more…)

Mobile Infantry Started

Faces painted.

Finishing a project is often a great boost to starting the next. Close on the heels of completing my 1812 British Infantry I’ve begun painting the Cap Troopers for the Starship Troopers game. As you can see, I decided to deviate from my normal practice of never painting eyes. I’m not sure why, perhaps because the sculpting had clearly defined eyes, perhaps because with so little face showing, and no other flesh, having eyes would humanize the figures. I do know that it’s a technique I’ll have to practice. In this image it looks like the figure is wearing crazy thick eyeliner, but it looks better normal size. As usual, I favour extremely large close-ups to expose flaws for improvement, or as teaching aids.

Mobile Infantry Assembled.

I finally sat down to do some photography and have been doing well to keep up with in progress shots of the first 9 figures of my 1812 project. Having dedicated workspace, kept well cleared, is crucial to be productive. My friend is learning this the hard way. He’s making his first steps into the wargaming hobby, and while he technically has more room than me, he doesn’t have a dedicated workspace. It apparently takes him 45 minutes to clear an area to work. This is when typically you have 1 hour available to paint. It doesn’t help that he’s a meticulous painter so he paints very slowly when he does get a chance. On the up side, his work is very crisp and clean, and as he develops techniques, his ability to lay down a clean, neat coat of paint will serve him well. (more…)

Painting Funk

One of the reasons I don’t like my mini-projects to go over a week is they start mocking me from the table. This keeps me away from the table, because being behind schedule means I’m not doing what I was looking forward to this week, but doing what I didn’t get around to last week. Part of the problem is the Stanley Cup, and part of the problems is being bummed out after trashing my bike; the terrible sight of the bike falling off its rack still flashes before my eyes from time to time.
