Choosing 28mm WWII Miniatures – Planning My First Order

So, I’ve decided on which manufacturer I’m going to use for my WWII Canadians. They’ve gotten greatest praise in quality and quantity, are available from an online source in my province who has a connection with my wargame club, and from the pictures I’ve seen, look good for 28mm. If only the club used 1/72 plastics. Sigh. My choice: Artizan. I’ll let you know how they turn out once they arrive.

It’s still a week off from when I plan to place my order. I could do it now, but as an exercise in discipline I’m waiting until my planned deadline. There’s nothing to stop me from making a list of what packs I wish to order now, however. This will help me decide how much I’m going to order at once, and which packs.

  • Artizan
    • SWW131 – Bren Teams
      • 1 Rifle
      • 1 Sten
      • 2 Brens
    • SWW132 – British Riflemen
      • 4 Rifles
    • SWW133 – British Riflemen
      • 4 Rifles
    • SWW138 – Sten Guns
      • 4 Stens
  • Crusader
    • WWB102 – British Riflemen
      • 4 Rifles

In order to field two sections I need 12 Rifles, 2 Stens, and 2 Brens. The difference between buying enough miniatures for one section or two is a single pack. Since shipping is flat it isn’t worth buying a single section. However, buying the whole platoon would be more money and miniatures than I like for a single order. Sure, it’ll cost me an extra $6 for the next batch, but it keeps me within both my financial and number-of-miniatures-purchased budget. That’s 20 miniatures for ~$67, enough to get me started. A week from now I’ll place the order and hopefully I’ll be finished painting my Necromunda miniature by then. It’d suck for the miniatures to arrive and then have to wait until my painting desk is clear.

I included a pack of Crusader to compare since it’ll come from the same place and people say they can be mixed. They’re wearing mk.III helmets which should add some nice variety.

I have been painting the Ratskin Chief, and I’ve made some notes for my next blog post. I just want to give the paint a day to dry to see if some of the shine will die down. I use slow-dri which means that final stage where the paint goes matte is delayed. Hopefully I can get some good pictures tomorrow.
